Great post; one of my favourite aspects of historical research is following threads from one source that lead you down fascinating (though occasionally tortuous) paths. Is it possible the disapproval of Heywood's work was compounded by his courtly connections? I'm familiar with him - currently not familiar enough - as the writer of 'A true description of his Majesties royall and most stately ship' (London, 1638) explaining, in both prose and poetry, the decorations of the Sovereign of the Seas, Charles' magnificent but impractical three-decker warship. I think I read somewhere that he was also the artist who designed the same decorations.
